PASSIVE-TRANSPORT MECHANISMS Flashcards
Diffusion
Movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Facilitated diffusion
Helper molecule within the membrane assists movement of substances from area of high concentration to area of low concentration.
Osmosis
Diffusion of water (solvent) from an area with more water to an area with less water; the water compartments are separated by a semipermeable membrane.
Filtration
The pushing of water & dissolved substances from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure; the water & dissolved substances are pushed.
Passive transport mechanisms require no additional energy in the form of ATP
Ex- downward movement of a ball on a hill.
What is the most common transport mechanism?
Diffusion
-From higher concentration to lower concentration.
The point at which no further net diffusion occurs is called
Equilibrium
During osmosis, the water diffuses from an area with more water to one with ____. The dissolved substances, however,do not move
1.)Less
Sometimes Osmosis is described as a _____ pressure
Pulling
Na+
Sodium
-Said to pull or hold water
