Passive/active/kidneys Flashcards
1
Q
What is passive transport?
A
-does not require an energy source. There are three types of passive transport.
2
Q
Define diffusion
A
-substances move from high to low concentration areas (passive transport)
3
Q
Define Facilitated Diffusion
A
- Substances move from a high to low concentration area with help from a carrier protein (passive transport)
4
Q
Define Osmosis
A
- Water moves from high to low concentrations through a selectively permeable membrane. This is WATER ONLY. (Passive transport)
5
Q
What is isotonic?
A
- Water concentration is even on both sides of a membrane
6
Q
What is hypertonic?
A
- When there is more water INSIDE the membrane than outside causing a cell to shrink
7
Q
What is active transport?
A
-requires an energy source. As a result, it usually moves substances from low to high concentrations there are three main types of active transport.
8
Q
Define Protein Pumps
A
- Substances move from low to high concentrations with help from a protein pump
- active transport
9
Q
What is endocytosis?
A
- when the cell engulfs (takes in) large amounts of materials
- active transport
10
Q
What is Exocytosis?
A
- When the cell expels (releases) large amounts of materials
- active transport
11
Q
What do the kidneys do?
A
- Bean shaped organs that filter your blood
- wastes and extra water become urine, which flows to the bladder through tubes call ureters
- if wastes aren’t released, you could get bladder infections / damage to the body (if wastes weren’t filtered and stayed in your blood)
12
Q
What is hemodialysis?
A
- a machine used to filter blood when a kidney fails
- blood flows through a special filter that removes wastes and extra fluids & the clean blood is returned to your body
- controls blood pressure and keeps proper balance of chemicals in your body like potassium and sodium
13
Q
What is hypotonic?
A
- When there is more water OUTSIDE the cell membrane than inside causing a cell to swell and probably burst
