Past simple tense
This tense is used to describe an action that has already happened.
Past simple structure
Subject + verb in past form
Past perfect
This tense is used to describe an action that was finished before another past action
Past perfect structure
Subject + had + verb in past participle
Past continuous
This tense is used to describe a past action that was ongoing. This action may have been interupted or another action also occurred.
Past continuous structure
Subject + was/were + verb(ing)
Past perfect continuous
This tense is used to describe an action started in the past and continued till another action or time in the past
Past perfect continuous structure:
Subject + had been + verb(ing)
