Stage 1 of Eutocia (Normal parturition)

A

When female is restless, pacing and nesting, seeking seclusion, panting, anorexia, vomiting and sometimes shivering.

  • Uterine contractions begins at this stage
  • This stage last 6-24 hours
  • About 12-24 hours prior to parturition, rectal temperature falls below 100F

Stage 2 of Eutocia

A
  • Viable uterine contractions
  • Cervical dilation
  • Rupture of chorioallantoic fluid
  • Explusion of Fetus
  • May be green mucous vaginal discharge before, during and after parturition
  • Once strong contractions are occurring, and the animal is pushing and fluid discharge has been seen, the time of delivery should be less than one hour for the first Fetus
  • Fetus should be birthed every 10-60 mins but can extend up to 3 hours

Stage 3

A

Expulsion of the Fetal membrane (Placenta)
*Should be seen 5-15 mins after each Fetus
*monitor females to ensure a placenta is delivered with each Fetus
(Retention fo placentas can cause endometritis later
