Parts Of The Neuron Flashcards
Neuron
The basic cell that makes up the nervous system and that receives and send messages within that system. It also transforms and relays electrical signals.
Dendrites
Branch like structures of a neuron amanting from the cell body that receive messages from other neurons.

Soma
The cell body of the new Ron responsible for maintaining the life of the cell. The proteins are made to be transported throughout the exam and dendrites here. It contains the nucleus of the cell and keeps the entire cell alive and functioning.

Axon
A fibre attached to the cell body that carries the neural impulses throughout its length to the other cells.
Tube like structure of neuron that carries the neural message from the cell body to the exon terminals for communication with other cells.

Axon terminals
Enlarged ends of exonal branches of the neuron specialised for communication between cells.
Branching of the end of the exon into several fibres which are shorter than axon that have little knobs on the ends called as presynaptic terminals, synaptic knobs, and terminal buttons.
Myelin sheath
Fatty substances produced by certain glial cells that code the exams of neurones to insulate protect and speed up the neural impulse.
Tracts
CNS
Bundles of myelin coated cables (of axon) in the central nervous system.
Nerves
Bundles of axons coated in myelin that travel together through the body.
Glial cells
Cell that provides support for the neurons to grow on and around, deliver nutrients to neurons, produce Myelin to coat axons, clean up waste products and dead neurons, influence information processing, and during prenatal development influence the generation of new neurons.
Dendritic Spines
The small protrusions/ structures that recieve inputs from the axons of other neurons.
These are the post synaptic contact points for many synapses.
