Parts Of The Eye Flashcards
Cornea
The transparent front part of the eye that refracts light to help it focus onto the retina.
Iris
The coloured part of the eye that controls the size of the pupil and thus regulates the amount of light entering the eye.
Pupil
The hole in the centre of the iris. It size changes depending on the light intensity (smaller in bright light, larger in dim light).
Lens
A transparent flexible structure that fine-tunes the focus of light onto the retina by changing shape.
Retina
The light sensitive layer at the back of the eye that contains rods and cones. It converts light into electrical impulses.
Rods
Photoreceptor cell that detect light intensity; works best in low light
Cones
Photoreceptor cells that detect colour; works best in bright light
Optic nerve
Carries electrical impulses from the retina to the brain
Suspensory ligaments
Connect the lens to the ciliary muscle and help hold the lens in place
Ciliary muscles
Contracts or relaxes to change the shape of the lens for focusing on near or far objects
Sclera
The tough white outer layer that protects the eye and helps maintain its shape.
Vitreous humour
The jelly-like substance that fills the main chamber of the eye, helping it keep its shape and hold the retina in place.
Blind spot
The point where the optic nerve leaves the eye, there are no photoreceptors here, so it’s insensitive to light.
