Parts of the Cell and Functions Flashcards
3 parts of the cell
Nucleus
Cell membrane
Cytoplasm
Cell Membrane
Envelope of the cell which gives shape, serves as covering and protective agent of the cell (Animal cell)
Cell Wall
Envelope of the cell which gives support and strength (Plant cell)
Cytoplasm
Intracellular environment which contains the organelles
Organelles
Tiny structures responsible in performing metabolic activities
Centriole
Creates centrosomes & basal bodies that produce cilia & flagella
Centrosome
House the centrioles. Produces spindle fibers
Chloroplast
Contains chlorophyll- essential in the process of photosynthesis
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Circulatory system of the cell
Rough ER
Lined with ribosomes, for the distribution of proteins
Smooth ER
For the transportation of carbohydrates and lipids
Golgi Complex (Golgi Apparatus)
Packaging plant and Secretory vesicle of the cell.
Collects materials from diff organelles and disposed them off via secretory vesicles
Lysosomes
“Suicide sacs”, creates lysozymes for digestion
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell.
Responsible in the production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), as the energy source
Ribosome
Spherical bodies for protein synthesis. Brings together amino acids to form particular proteins
Cytoskeleton
Complex network of interlinking filaments or tubules
Microfilaments
For cell movement and cytokinesis
Microtubules
Maintains cell shape, forms centrioles
Intermediate Filaments
Provide strength and support
Flagella and Cilia
For cell movement
Vacuoles
For the storage of materials (nutrients, water, waste)
Nucleus
“Brain of the cell”
Controls the hereditary characteristics of an organism, storage of hereditary material
Nucleolus
For the production of ribosomea
Nucleoplasm
Enclosed by a double membrane lining. Stores and synthesizes most of the human genome
