Parts of the Cell Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
surrounds cell forming boundary between cell and external environment; regulates the movement of substances in and out of the cell; composed of a phospholipid bilayer and other components
Cytoplasm
region inside cell that contains the cytosol, cytoskeleton, and organelles
Nucleus
control center of the cell; contains cell’s DNA
Nucleolus
area within the nucleus for RNA and ribosome production
Mitochondrion
produces most of the cell’s ATP; powerhouse of the cell
Ribosome
site of protein synthesis
Peroxisome
contains enzymes that detoxify chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
lipid and cholesterol synthesis and metabolism and drug toxin detoxification
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
modify proteins made by ribosomes
Golgi Apparatus (Complex)
modifies and packages proteins for export or use in the cell
Lysosome
contains digestive enzymes that break down different substances, low pH
Centriole
paired organelles that has microtubules, important in nuclear division
Cilia
hairlike extensions from plasma membrane that move substances past the cell
Flagella
single tail-like extension from cell that moves the cell; found only in sperm
