define pronoun
a word used in the place of one of more nouns
what is a demonstrative pronoun?
a pronoun that points to specific things
ex: THAT fox is red
what is an interrogative pronoun
a pronoun that introduces a question
ex: WHO went to the store?
what is a relative pronoun
a pronoun that introduces a relative clause
ex: the man WHO broke the window
what is a relative clause
introduces information about the main clause
ex: my mother, WHO HAS BROWN HAIR, is standing there
what is an indefinite pronoun
a pronoun that does not refer to any person, place, thing, or idea in particular
ex: ANYBODY can answer my question
define conjunction
a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause
what is a coordinating conjunction
a conjunction that is used to connect words, phrases, clauses, and sentences together
ex: she didn’t speak to anyone, AND nobody spoke to her
what is a subordinating conjunction
a conjunction that is used to connect dependent and independent clauses
ex:
the stadium looks messy AFTER the match
what are correlative conjunctions
conjunctions used to illustrate how two words or phrases within a sentence relate to each other. always come in pairs
ex:
i will eat EITHER peas OR carrots for dinner
define preposition
a word that shows the relationship between the noun and a pronoun/noun and expresses relation to another word or element in the clause
ex:
she was sitting UNDER the tree
what is a compound preposition
a preposition that consists of two or more words
ex:
gabby is NEXT TO the chair
what is the difference between a preposition and an adverb
prepositions must have an object
ex:
he ran around the BUILDING
*building is the object, so “around” is a preposition
he ran around
*missing the object, so “around” is an adverb
define noun
a person, place, thing, or idea
ex:
i went to the STORE
what is a proper noun
a noun that describes a specific person, place, thing, or idea
*always capitalized
ex:
Phil, New York, Kleenex
