Nouns
Type of noun that name things we cannot see, touch, or detect readily through our senses. (existentialism, democracy, love, angst)
Abstract Nouns
Type of nouns that name persons, including animals (cousins, Roger Rabbit), places (beach, Chico), or things we can see, touch, or otherwise detect through our senses (smoke, beer).
Concrete Nouns
Type of noun that identifies a particular person, animal, place, thing, or idea. Capitalized all the time. (Sierra Nevada Crystal Wheat, The Rooks and the Rangers)
Proper Nouns
Type of noun that does not name a particular person or thing; rather, it refers to a whole class or type. (beer, teams, parks)
Common Nouns
Type of noun that names a collection or group of things. (army, alliance, jury)
Collective Nouns
a word used in place of a noun. Usually substituted for a specific noun, which is called its antecedent.
Pronoun
Type of pronoun also refer to specific persons, places, or things (I, we, me, us, you)
Personal pronoun
Type of pronoun that refer to general persons, places, or things.(anyone, no one, anything, nothing, every one, everything)
Indefinite Pronoun
Type of pronoun that replace possessive nouns. Thus, Jamie’s Corvette becomes her Corvette. This never take apostrophes. (my, mine, our, yours, your)
Possessive Pronoun
Type of pronoun that add emphasis. (myself, ourselves, yourself)
Reflexive Pronoun
Type of pronoun that begins a clause that refers to a noun in a sentence. (that, which, who, whom, whoever)
Relative Pronoun
Type of pronoun that indicates specific persons, places, or things. (this, that, those, these)
Demonstrative Pronoun
