What is a part of speech?
A category to which a word is assigned based on the role it plays in a sentence
What are the 8 part of speech?
Nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections
What is a noun?
A person, place, thing, or idea
What are two types of nouns?
Common nouns: does NOT name a specific person place or thing
Proper nouns: DOES name a specific person place or thing
What are collective nouns?
Refers to a group of something
Example: a CROWD of fans
What is a pronoun?
A word that takes place of a noun
Example: I, me, myself, you, yours, he, she, they, it
What is a adjective?
Word that describes a noun or pronoun
Example: pink, fluffy
Shows physical or mental action being performed by the subject
Example: run, jump
Action verb
Describes a verb; often ends in -ly and can tell how often when and where something is done
Adverbs
Examples: very, always, never, not slowly, quickly
What is a preposition?
A word that shows the position or direction
Example: on, under, next to, on top of, behind, between
A word that joins words or word groups together
Example: FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
Conjunctions
What is a interjection?
Expresses strong emotion or feeling, usually followed by a comma or exclamation mark
Example: well, oh no!
