Common noun
A common noun is a non-specific person, place, or thing.
Examples: dog and girl
Proper noun
A name used for an individual person, place, or organization, spelled with an initial capital letter.
Examples: Jane, London, and Oxfam.
Abstract noun
A noun denoting an idea, quality, or state rather than a concrete object.
Examples: truth, danger, happiness.
Collective noun
A count noun that denotes a group of individuals.
Examples: assembly, family, and crew.
Pronoun
A word that can function as a noun phrase used by itself and that refers either to the participants in the discourse (e.g. I, you ) or to someone or something mentioned elsewhere in the discourse (e.g. she, it, this ).
Adjective
A word naming an attribute of a noun.
Examples: sweet, red, and technical.
Comparative
Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between the two objects they modify.
Examples: larger, smaller, faster, and higher.
Superlative
Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object which is at the upper or lower limit of a quality. They are used in sentences where a subject is compared to a group of objects.
Examples: the tallest, the smallest, the fastest, the highest.
Verb
A word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence.
Examples: hear, become, and happen.
Adverb
A word or phrase that modifies the meaning of an adjective, verb, or other adverb, expressing manner, place, time, or degree.
Examples: gently, here, now, and very.
Article; indefinite
The indefinite article (a, an) is used before a noun that is general or when its identity is not known.
Example: I think an animal is in the garage.
Article; definite
The definite article (the) is used before a noun to indicate that the identity of the noun is known to the reader.
Example: The boy sitting next to me raised his hand.
Verb tense; past
Past tense verbs refer to actions or events in the past.
Examples: Accepted, asked, felt.
Verb tense; present
The present tense is used to describe things that are happening right now, or things that are continuous.
Examples: see, feel, go.
Verb tense; future
To describe an action that will happen in the future.
Examples: Will see, will accept, I will be.
