Nouns
person place or thing
Eg. Sally, Australia, table, happy
Adjective
Describes a noun or pronoun. An adjective tells what kind, how many, or which one.
Eg. Happy, brave (what kind)
more, two (how many)
this, that (which one)
Verb
Can tell what action someone or something is doing. A verb can also express a state of being.
Eg. Run, jump (action)
am, are (state of being)
Pronoun
Is used in place of a noun in a sentence. A pronoun may take the place of the name of a person, place or thing
Eg. I, she, we, he
Article
The words a, an, and the belong to a special group of adjective called articles. An article can be used before a noun in a sentence.
Eg. A dog, a rabbit (a)
An apple, an ant (an)
The boy, the bird (the)
Adverb
Describes a verb, adjective or another adverb. An adverb tells how, when, where or to what degree. Eg. Quickly (how) Today (when) Outside (where) Barely (to what degree)
Preposition
Combines with a noun or pronoun to form a phrase that tells something about another word in a sentence.
Eg. From, to, until, over
Conjunction
Joins together single words or groups of words in a sentence
Eg. And, but, or, because
Interjection
Expresses strong feeling or emotion. An interjection can be a single word or a phrase.
Eg. Help!, Ouch!, Look out!, Oh dear !
Abstract noun
A noun that can not be seen or touched. It describes an idea, quality, or state
E.g. Happiness, determination, beauty
Collective noun
A count noun that indicates a group of individuals.
Eg. Family, crew, pod, swarm
Proper noun
A proper noun is a noun used for an individual person, place, or organization, spelled with an initial capital letter.
Eg. Josie, Australia, Google, Haileybury
Common noun
A general person place or thing
Eg. Girl, state, park
Singular noun
Names one person, place, thing or idea
Eg. Sally, day, child
Plural noun
A word that indicates there is more than one person, place or thing.
Eg. Boats, houses, cats, rivers
