noun
a person, place, thing, or idea.
common noun
a general person, place, thing, or idea and is not capitalized
proper noun
a specific person, place, thing, or idea and are capitalized.
concrete noun
a physical object in the real world.
abstract noun
an idea or concept that does not exist in the real world and cannot be touched.
pronoun
words that replace or stand in for other nouns in a sentence.
articles
words that appear before nouns to show whether the noun is specific or general
action/main verb
a word that shows action
linking verb
verbs that connect the subject of a sentence to something that describes it (adverb, adjective).
helping verb
verbs that connect the main verb of the sentence to its subject
adjectives
words that modify or describe nouns in a sentence (also called modifiers)
adverbs
words that modify or describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
coordinate adjective
adjectives that are in the same category (size, shape, color, etc) that can be rearranged without changing the meaning of the sentence.
comparative adjective
adjectives that compare two things.
superlative adjective
adjectives that are used to describe what is most or least among multiple things.
preposition
words used to show relationships in location, time, or direction.
prepositional phrase
a group of words containing a preposition, its object, and any words that modify the object (modifiers).
conjunction
words that link other words, phrases, or clauses together.
coordinating conjunction
words that join two things of equal rank (2 verbs, 2 adjectives, 2 phrases, etc)
subordinating conjunction
words that introduce dependent clauses.
