There are eight parts of speech in the English language. The part of speech indicates how the word functions in the meaning as well as grammatically within the sentences.
Noun
is a word for a person, place, thing, or idea.
Common Nouns
A general name of a noun
Not capitalized Ex: hairspray, car, and orange
Proper Nouns
specific name for a person place thing or idea
Capitalized
Ex: Anderson,SC
Concrete Nouns
A noun that can be perceived with the five senses (Touch, hearing, sight, smell, and taste)
Ex: Pencil , food , dog
Abstract Nouns
a noun that you can’t directly experience with any of your 5 senses
Ex: feelings, emotion, and ideas
Pronoun
A word replaces a noun
Antecedent
The word that the pronoun replaces or represents
Personal Pronouns
Refers to people or things
Ex: I, me, him, it, she, they, them, and he
Possessive Pronouns
Shows ownership
Ex: mine, his, her, and ours
Demonstrative Pronoun
identifies someone or something
(this, that, these, those)
Verb
expresses action or state of being
Action Verbs
express an action (very common)
ex: Drove or Wrote
Linking Verbs
express a state of being & link the subject to a description
ex: Mrs.Spencer _is__ tired
Verb Phrase
The verb contains more than 1 word
ex: will go
has seen
went to
Adjective
(Which one, what kind, or how many?)
modifies or describes a noun or pronoun
