Noun
A person, place, thing or idea
Examples: finesse, education, school, New York, teacher
Helpful Reminder: The ball. “Ball” is the noun.
Pronoun
A word used in place of a noun
Examples: I, her, him, it, that, these, she, he
Helpful Reminder: These shoes are old. “These” is the Pronoun.
Adjective
A word that describes or gives information about a noun or pronoun
Examples: colorful, edious, incessant, joyful, loud
Helpful Reminder: The loud truck. “Truck” is the adjective.
Verb
A word that shows action or state of being
Examples: talk, jump, scream, run, is, am, are
Helpful Reminder: Verbs change when in the present, past or future.
He is running. “Running” is the verb.
Adverb
A word that describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb and tells where, when, how, or to what extent
Examples: slowly, carefully, incessantly
Helpful Reminder: often ends in “ly”
She slowly walked to class. “Slowly” is the adverb.
Preposition
Shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word
Examples: to, over, under, at, between, in
Helpful Reminder: The squirrel ran over the tree. “Over” is the preposition.
Conjunction
A word that connects words, groups of words and sentences
Examples: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
Helpful Reminder:They got in a fight but, didn’t get detention. “But” is the conjunction.
Interjection
A word that expresses surprise or strong feeling. Separate from the sentence.
Examples: Wow! Hey!
Helpful Reminder: She hit a homerun. Wow! “Wow!” is the interjection.
