Sentence
group of words that make sense on their own - contain subject and predicate
Phrase
group of words forming incomplete sentence
Independent Clause
sentence that can act on its own
“when Sandy woke up, IT WAS STILL DARK OUTSIDE”
Dependent Clause
cannot stand alone
“WHEN SANDY WOKE UP, it was still dark outside”
Direct object
what RECEIVES the action
“Zach threw THE BALL over the fence”
Indirect object
answers to whom? or for whom? - affected by the action but DOESN’T receive the action
“Zach threw the ball of THE FENCE”
Declarative Sentence
States something
“I went to the store”
Interrogative sentence
asks yes/no, open ended questions
“What did you do yesterday?”
Imperative sentence
expresses command
“Don’t touch that!”
Exclamatory Sentence
makes a statement with added emotion
