Parts of Pharmacology Flashcards
What is a drug?
Any substance that interacts with a living organism and brings functional changes as a consequence of its interactions at the molecular level
Generic Name
Derived from chemical name and provides indication of the class to which a particular drug belongs
Chemical Name
Specifies chemical structure of a drug using standard chemical nomenclature
Trend (Brand) Name
Registered brand name or trademark belonging to a particular drug manufacturer
Drug class
Describes medications that are grouped together because of similarities in the chemical structure, mechanism of action and/or specific way in which the body responds to a drug
What are the three types of names a drug can have?

Generic name
Trend (Brand) name
Pharmacology
Science of the interaction of chemical substances (drugs) with human beings
Toxicology
Focuses on the harmful effects of chemicals and on the mechanisms by which toxic agents produce pathologic changes, disease and death.
What is the part of pharmacology dealing with the study of adverse effects of drugs?
Toxicology
Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics
Deals with clinical use of drugs for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases
Pharmacokinetics (PK)
Describes the effects of the body on the drug
Pharmacodynamics (PD)
Describes the actions of the drug on the body
Pharmacokinetics is the study of what?
Time course of the drug during ADME processes
Pharmacokinetics (PK)
- Absorption
Process which a drug moves from the site of administration into the circulation
