Parts of cells and functions Flashcards
Function of cell membrane
Regulates the masses of materials in and out of cell; separates the internal chemical reactions of the cell from external environment
Function of nucleus
Controls the reproduction and activities of cell; carrier of genetic information
Function of ribosomes
Create protiens
Difference from chromatin and chromosomes
When the cell isn’t divided, the DNA is called chromatin. When the cell is dividing, the chromatin becomes chromosomes
Function of the nucleolus
Manufactures the subunits that make up ribosomes
What is Endoplasmic reticulum
Known as the internal membrane system of the cell, and provides a path for molecules to move from one part of the cell to another.
Difference from rough ER and smooth ER
rough ER allows ribosomes to attach, and is involved in the making of proteins, meanwhile smooth ER doesn’t have ribosomes, and instead makes lipids
Function of the Golgi apparatus
Modifies and packages the proteins that arrive from the ER
What are vesicles
Small spherical sacs that are classified by their contents.
Function of lysosomes
Destroy old organelles that no longer carry out their function
Function of peroxisomes
Break down alcohols and kill bacteria which produces hydrogen peroxide
What is a vacuole
Storage area that may store water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates
Function of the mitochondria
Cellular respiration, which is when it converts glucose or sugar molecules into a usable form of energy.
What is cytoskeleton
Network of protein tubes and fibers that give cell shape
2 types of fibers in cytoskeleton
Microfilaments and microtubules; microfilaments are solid and give support to cell and help cell move. Microtubules are hollow and maintain the cell shape and separate chromosomes and form cilia and flagella
