Parts Of Brain Flashcards
Largest part of brain, contains thalamus and hypothalamus
Forebrain
Received sensory info (not smell) and gives to cerebral cortex, influences sleep Part of forebrain, located above brain stem. Part of forebrain
Thalamus
Small structure, important role in the control of survival actions (sleep, body temp, emotions and 4 F’s) , part of forebrain
Hypothalamus
Responsible for regulation of sleep, motor movement and arousel
Midbrain
Network of neurons that connects midbrain and forebrain , important in control of arousel and sleeping & waking cycle, part of midbrain
Reticular formulation
Hindbrain functions
Supports bodily functions and is link between spine and brain. Important in movement and balance
Continuation of spine, controls breathing, heartbeat and digestion. Part of hindbrain
Medulla
Coordinates body movement, part of hindbrain
Cerebellum
Outermost layer of the brain, responsible for higher order processes like memory, language, reasoning, emotion and decision making
Cerebral cortex
The idea that each hemisphere has control over certain functions
Hemispheric specialisation
Ride hemispheres controls left body, left hemisphere controls right body
Co-lateral control
Left hemisphere roles
Speech, language, writing, reasoning, logical thinking, mathematical processes, sequential information processing
Right hemisphere roles
Drawing, spatial orientation, expressing and reading emotions, music and art awareness, intuition, creativity
