Parts of an Atom, Atoms in General Flashcards
What is a proton?
A positively charged subatomic particle
What is a neutron?
A subatomic particle that has no charge
What is an electron?
A negatively charged subatomic particle
What is a valence electron?
The electrons that bond with other chemicals
What is an isotope?
Isotopes are atoms with equal numbers of electrons and protons but inequal amounts of neutrons.
What is cohesion?
Cohesion is what keeps atoms bonded together, these atoms bond by sharing electrons, also known as a covalent bond.
What is an ionic bond?
When electrons are transferred between two or more atoms causing an ionic bond.
What does a polar molecule mean?
When an atom, or molecule is polar, it means that there is an imbalance between either a number of electrons and protons or there is an imbalance between the placement of protons and electrons.
What is the mass number?
The mass of an atom.
What is the atomic number?
Number of protons in an atom
How do you find the amount of neutrons in an atom?
Atomic number - Atomic mass.
