Parts of An Airplane Flashcards
Wing Strut
The pole stabilizing the wing generally to the fuselage.
Aileron
Movable horizontal wing located on the outer trailing edge of the fixed wing.
Controls the aircraft in roll or bank.
The ailerons on either wing typically oppose each other in bank.
The plane turns in the direction of the lifted aileron.
Fuselage
The aircraft’s main body holding passengers and cargo.
Horizontal Stabilizer
Fixed Horizontal Wing located at the back of the fuselage below the fin & dorsal.
Vertical Stabilizer (Fin and Dorsal)
The Vertical Wing on the back of the fuselage to which the rudders are attached.
To reduce aerodynamic side slip and increase stability.
Rudder
Vertical Movable Wing located on the Vertical Stabilizer at the back of the fuselage.
Used to counter adverse yaw and p-factor.
Elevator
Horizontal Movable Wing located behind the vertical stabilizer at the back of the Fuselage.
Change the pitch balance and thus angle of attack and lift of the wing of the plane.
When up, plane’s nose lifts.
When down, plane’s nose falls.
Flaps
Hinged wings located on the inner trailing edge of the fixed wing.
Reduces the speed at which an aircraft can be flown and increases the angle of descent for landing, effectively shortening the distance for takeoff and landing.
(Lower stall speed and increase drag.)
Engine Cowl
Cover over the engine.
Wing Tip Lights
Located on the side edge of the wing.
Landing Light
Located on the leading edge of the wing.
Empennage
The tail assembly of vertical and horizontal stabilizers that give stability to an aircraft.
Trim Tabs
Small movable surfaces connected to the trailing edge of the wing. Used to control the trim.
