Character Development
a person’s essential quality or personality
Character Traits
the method used by the author to give readers information about the character; a description or representation of a person’s qualities or peculiarities
Characterization
a person or animal that takes part in action of a story, play, or other literary work
Characters
the point in a story that creates the most suspense or interest
Climax
a struggle or clash between the opposing characters or forces
Conflict
the writer makes a direct statement about a character’s personality and tells what the character is like
Direct Characterization
a literary or dramatic character that encounters a conflict and is changed by it; an important inner change; a change in personality or attitude
Dynamic Character
the beginning of a story that tells us who the characters are and usually what their conflict is
Exposition
a struggle between a person and an outside force
External Conflict
when the outcome of the story is decided one way or another
Falling Action
a character that isn’t described well or not given much information about; a flat character often lacks a complete and realistic personality
Flat Character
the writer reveals information about a character through the character’s thoughts, words, actions, looks, and clothing, or what other characters think and say about them
Indirect Characterization
a struggle or problem that takes place within the character’s mind
Internal Conflict
the series of related events that make up a story; consists of an exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution
Plot
the final part of the story in which the conflict is resolved and the story is brought to a close
Resolution
a part of the plot when complications arise and the characters have to take steps to resolve the conflict
Rising Action
a character in fiction whose personality, background, motives, and other features are described in great detail by the author; the main character in a story is almost always round
Round Character
a literary or dramatic character who undergoes little or no inner change over the course of the story or novel
Static Character
the uncertainty or anxiety you feel about what will happen next in a story
Suspense
