Parts Of A Microscope Flashcards
Ocular Lenses
You look at your sample through these lenses. These lenses help to magnify the light that allows you to see your sample
Objective lenses
these lenses help to magnify the light to allow you to see your sample. These lenses are fragile so you must be careful when rotating them and when moving the stage up and down
Stage
Your sample goes here so that you can view it on the microscope. The stage can move up and down
Iris Diaphragm
By moving this lever you can let more light through to your sample
Power switch
Microscopes only work you have light. Make sure the microscope is plugged in and that the power switch is “on”
Rheostat
Moving this dial can increase or decrease the amount of light that reaches your sample
Microscope slide
Your sample will be on a glass microscope slide. You will usually place a small amount of water on the sample and then place a thin, glass coverslip on top. Students often forget the coverslip.
Stage clip
The stage clip is used to hold the microscope slide with the sample in place on the stage
Base
You want to move the microscope by supporting it by the base and the arm.
Fine Focus Knob
the fine focus knob moves the stage in smaller increments. This allows for more precise focusing of a sample. you should use only the fine focus knob when on objective lenses higher than the lowest
Coarse Focus Knob
The coarse focus knob moves the stage in large increments. this knob should only be used when using the lowest objective lens (4X)
X+Y Stage knobs
The focus knobs move the stage up and down, which allows us to bring our sample into focus and center it.
Arm
You want to move the microscope by supporting it by the base and arm.
