Parts of a Long Bone Flashcards
1
Q
Epiphyseal Disk
A
Area of cartilage that’s undergoing mitosis and producing new cartilage that eventually forms bone through the invasion of osteoblasts. This is where the bone lengthens until it ossifies.
2
Q
Diaphysis
A
Shaft of the bone.
3
Q
Periosteum
A
Tough, vascular layer that covers the bone. Aids in formation/repair of the bone.
4
Q
Compact Bone
A
Continuous matrix, no gaps, very hard.
5
Q
Spongy Bone
A
Thin layers of compact bone with gaps, usually in the epiphysis.
6
Q
Medullary Cavity
A
Found in the diaphysis, houses blood vessels and some marrow.
7
Q
Endosteum
A
Lines the medullary cavity.
