Parts of a cell Flashcards
Nuclear membrane
A membrane that separates the nucleus of a cell from the cytoplasm
Mitochondrion
A structure in the cytoplasm of a cell in which the aerobic of respiration occurs
Nucleolus
A structure within a cell’s nucleus; involved in protein synthesis
Lysosome
A small sphere formed from a Golgi body; contains digestive enzymes
Golgi apparatus
A structure in the cytoplasm if a cell consisting of a stack of flattened channels; it packages materials for a secretion from the cell
Cell membrane
A membrane that form the external boundary of a cell; also called the plasma membrane
Ribosomes
A minute particle consisting of RNA and associated proteins found in large numbers in the cytoplasm of living cells. They bind messenger RNA and transfer RNA to synthesise polypeptides and proteins
Cytoplasm
The contents of a cell, excluding the nucleus; also called protoplasm
Centriole
A structure in a cell consisting of two rings of microtubules; it has a function in cell divisions
Cilia
Hair-like processes projecting from a cell; they beat rythmically to move to the whole cell or to move material across the cell surface; singular cilium
Flagella
A long hair or projection from a cell; often has the function if moving the cell
Cytoskeleton
An internal scaffolding of protein fibres within the cytoplasm of a cell
Inclusions
Chemical substances inside a cell in the form of granules or droplets
Organelles
Structures within the cytoplasm of a cell, each with specific functions
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
A smooth surface network of tubular membranes within the cytoplasm; it makes cellular products like hormones and lipids
