Parts Of A Cell Flashcards
Cell membrane
A selectively permeable lipid membrane that controls which substances can enter and leave the cell. Also allows cells to make contact with one another and provides receptor sites for cell specific chemicals such as hormones.
Mitochondria
The site of the aerobic phase of cellular respiration and the production of ATP ( energy)
Golgi body
Responsible for the secretion of cell products such as lipids and proteins, forms lysosomes.
Lysosomes
A membrane bond structure that contains powerful digestive enzymes. These enzymes can be secreted or used to destroy foreign indigested materials or redundant cell structures.can cause the cell to self destruct if damaged.
Ribosomes
Made up of ribosomal RNA and is the site of protein synthesis
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Line with ribosomes and transports proteins within the cell
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Involved in the manufacture of lipids
Nucleus
Contains chromosomes whose genes determine the actives of the cell
Nucleolus
A non membrane bound structure in the nucleus that stores and
Manufactures ribosomal RNA
Centrioles
Involved in the formation of spindles during nuclear division
Cilia
Hair linked projections of a cell, they beat rhythmically to move through the whole cell or move material across the cells surface
Flagella
Long hair or projection from the cell, often has the function of moving the cell. (Tail)
Microvilli
Microscopic projections from the membrane of the cells lining the small intestine; increase surface area for absorption
