Parts of a Cell Flashcards
Cytoplasm
Jelly like substance that fills the cell that has the building blocks for life
Organelle
A small part of the cell with a specific function
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Helps with protein folding, packaging in vesicles that will later be shipped generally to the golgi apparatus
Rough ER
Synthesis of Proteins
Smooth ER
Synthesis of Lipids
Golgi Apparatus
Packages and modifies proteins received from the ER to be used in the cell or packaged to be secreted via exocytosis
Ribosomes
The protein-synthesizing machines of the cell. They translate the information encoded in messenger RNA (mRNA) into a polypeptide.
Mitochondria
Produces ATP through cellular respiration or the Krebs Cycle and the Electron Transport Chain
Vacuole
Storage bubbles found in cells. They store food to help the cell survive. May also store contaminants to help keep the cell safe.
Lysosome
Break down waste materials and cellular debris. They can be described as the stomach of the cell. Digest excess or worn-out organelles, food particles, and engulfed viruses or bacteria.
Nucleolus
Site of genes for rRNA synthesis. Assembles ribosomes
Centrioles
Bar shapes structures, anchor and assemble microtubules
