Parts of a cell Flashcards
Chloroplasts
Found in some plant cells. Contain chlorophyll in which photosynthesis takes place. It is composed of many folded layers of membrane.
Cytoplasm
Found in all cells. The contents of a cell, other than the nucleus. It is more than 90% water and contains ions, salts, enzymes, food molecules and organelles.
Endoplasmic reticulum
It may be rough or smooth. It is involved with the production, processing, transport and storage of materials within the cell.
Golgi Apparatus
A stack of flat membrane sacs where the final synthesis and packaging of proteins occurs before they are secreted from the cell.
Nucleus
A large organelle surrounded by a membrane and contains genetic material and controls cellular activities.
Cell membrane
Encloses the cytoplasm in all cells. It controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell.
Ribosomes
Tiny organelles located in the cytoplasm. They are sites for production of proteins.
Vacuoles
Liquid filled spaces found in most cells in variable numbers. Plant cells typically have large fluid filled vacuoles containing cell sap that provided physical support and storage. In other cells, vacuoles may be involved in intracellular digestion or water balance
Cell Wall
Important part of plant cells and bacteria. In plant cells it contains cellulose. It supports, prevents expansion of the cell and allows water and dissolved substances to pass freely through it.
Mitochondria
Organelles composed of many folded layers of membrane involved in the energy transformations that release energy for use by the cell.
