Parts of a Cell Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
The protective layer around the cell that lets some things in and out (think of a fence)
Cytoplasm
The watery stuff in the cell that everything is floating in
Ribosomes
small grains floating in the cell; this is where proteins are made
Nucleus
The “brain” of the cell; contains the DNA; is surrounded by the nuclear membrane
DNA
contains all the genetic information; the long name is deoxyribonucleic acid
Chromosome
there are 23 pairs (46 total) in each nucleus; contains the DNA
Rough endoplasmic reticulum (rough ER)
folded pathways covered with ribosomes where new proteins are made
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (smooth ER)
where the transport vesicles are made
Transport vesicles
used to move things around the cell
Golgi apparatus
where stuff is packaged to be transported (think of a UPS store or a post office)
Lysosomes
where stuff the cell doesn’t need is broken down; these also kill bacteria (think of a landfill)
Vacuoles
large storage sacs
Vesicles
small storage sacs
Mitochondria
the “power” station of the cell–where ATP is made by breaking enzymes down into sugars used for energy
ATP
used for energy for the cell; made in the mitochondria
