PARTS Lecture Flashcards
What is PARTS?
A system of assessment used to evaluate spinal joint function using the procedures and criteria listed:
Pain and tenderness
Asymmetry
Range of motion
Tone texture and temp
Special tests
How are pain and tenderness identified?
Observation, percussion, provocation, and palpation
How are pain and tenderness evaluated?
Terms of location, quality, and intensity
How should pain intensity be objectified?
VAS, NPRS, or pain questionnaire.
What falls under asymmetry?
Posture, gait, palpation
How are findings of asymmetry identified?
Observation of posture and gait, static palpation, and static X rays.
What is the goal of bony palpation?
To locate bony landmarks and assess contour for any joint malpositions, anomalies, or tenderness
Asymmetry can be one of two things?
Sectional or segmental
How to assess for range of motion?
Clinician evaluates total range, symmetry, and pattern of movement as well as muscle tone. Any painful limitations, abnormal movements, painful arcs should be noted.
What is more valuable in identifying general NMS dysfunction and why?
Spinal abnormalities in a global range of motion bc disorders that produce individual spinal joint restrictions may still demonstrate normal regional movements due to concealed compensatory hyper mobility at adjacent joints.
What does not confirm the presence or absence of segmental spinal joint dysfunction, unlike range of motion abnormalities?
Regional restrictions to spinal movement
What does local temperature regulation result from?
The interaction of multilevel spinal reflexes with the central autonomic control mechanism.
What controls thermal regulatory system?
Sympathetic nervous system via vast motor reflex mechanism.
What is the spinal index used for?
Used in conjunction with exam to decide whether an adjustment will be made and how and when and where it will be applied
What is the purpose of PARTS?
Serves as a guide in decision making regarding areas of the spine in need of a chiropractic adjustment
