Parts Flashcards
What does the heart do?
It takes in deoxygenated blood through the veins and delivers it to the lungs for oxygenation before pumping it to other parts of the body.
What is the heart?
A muscular organ the size of a closed fist that functions as the body’s circulatory pump
Where is the heart located?
In the thoracic cavity medial to the lungs and posterior to the sternum.
The heart points in which direction?
the left
What fraction of the heart is found on the left and what fraction on the right?
left-2/3
right-1/3
What is the apex?
the tip of the heart pointing to the left side
What is the pericardium?
a special membrane surrounding the heart that produces fluid to prevent friction between the beating heart and other internal organs
What are the functions of the pericardium?
- holds the heart in position
- maintains a hollow space for the heart to expand into
- provides serous fluid
What are the two layers of the pericardial cavity?
- visceral
- parietal
What is the function of the visceral layer of the pericardial cavity?
covers the outside of the heart
What is the function of the parietal part of the pericardium?
form a sac around the outside of the cavity
What are the three layers of the heart in order from in to out?
- Epicardium
- Myocardium
- Endocardium
What is the function of the epicardium?
A layer of serous membrane (it is another name for the visceral layer of the pericardium) that helps to lubricate and protect the outside of the heart
What is the function of the myocardium?
The muscular middle layer of the heart that makes up most of the thickness of the heart wall. This is responsible for pumping blood.
What is the endocardium?
The thin smooth layer inside of
the heart that keeps blood from sticking to the heart and clotting.
