What are the aims of partner notification?
Break the chain of infection
Prevent re-infection of the index case by an un-treated partner
Identify un-diagnosed infection
Encourage health seeking behaviour- encouraging people to get tested
Reduce risks and complications due to untreated infection
What does a partner notification discussion usually include?
Discussion of the infection and how it is transmitted
Discussion regarding all the people who may have contracted the STI
Discussion regarding the need to adhere to treatment and stay abstinent until treatment is completed
Identification of any at risk partners and how they might be notified
What are the options for partner notification?
Patient Referral- Responsibility of the patient to contact at-risk partners to inform them that they should be tested. This may be done using anonymous contact slips
Provider Referral- Responsibility is of the HCP to contact all at risk parters with contact information supplied by the patient
Why might partner notification not be successful?
Index case did not inform sexual contacts
Contacts chose not to attend
Index case choses not to engage with partner notification
Partners are un-traceable such as with a one night stand
What are the four out-comes from partner notification?
Untraceable- e.g. one night stand
Informed
Attended
Verified Attended
