-More generous in terms of social security- Clinton popular for saving social security- however generosity is limited- Clinton’s Welfare to Work.
-Universal preschools, slashes in student loan debt and reduction of tuition fees.
Republicans’ beliefs and policies on social welfare
-Limit LGBT education- eg. Don’t Say Gay.
-Getting rid of the Department of Education.
-No Child Left Behind (NCLB) under Bush to set standards for English and Maths
-Opposition of Medicaid (for the poor)
-Expand Medicare
-Increasingly anti-vax
-BUT haven’t got rid of ACA or Social Security
Democrats’ beliefs and policies on Moral issues/ rights
-Support of Affirmative Action for equal opportunity
-Support for equality Act, Don’t Ask Don’t tell repeal Act, Hate Crime Prevention Act etc.
- Gun control: Crime Control Act, 2008 Renewal of 1994 Assault weapons ban.
-Support privacy
-Support access to safe abortion.
Easier path to citizenship- DREAM Act and DACA +DAPA
Republicans’ beliefs and policies on Moral issues/ rights
-Mass deportations under Trump
-Equal marriage to be left up to states
-School Prayer
-Oppose gun regulation
-Anti-abortion except in case of rape or incest
-No LGBT education
Democrats’ beliefs and policies on Economic Policy
-More social spending, less military spending
-Low tax but not tax cuts
-Support regulation but GLBA went against this (under Clinton)
-Subsequently Obama implemented regulation
Republicans’ beliefs and policies on Economic Policy
-Tax cuts
-Private spending
-Tea Party Republicans: Cut in debt and spending (but not reflected in GOP policy)
-Military spending
-Record spending under Reagan, Bush
-Pro- tariffs
-Tax cuts but increased spending on deportations under Trump?
