Particles model of matter Flashcards
What is pressure?
the effect of a force over an area
what is speed?
a measure of how far something travels in a period of time
How do you measure speed?
Distance ÷ time
How do you measure Distance?
Speed x time
How do you measure time?
Distance ÷ Speed
What causes pressure?
Air particles banging into things or each other
2 ways you can increase pressure:
- Increasing the temperature
- Smaller container
-Both make the particles travel quicker increasing the pressure
What is density?
how closely packed the particles are in a solid, liquid or gas
What is mass?
the amount of matter or substance that makes up an object
What is weight?
the pull of gravity on an object
How do you measure density?
Mass ÷ Volume
How do you measure volume?
Mass ÷ Density
How do you measure mass?
Density x Volume
How do you measure pressure?
Force ÷ Area
What is Gas Pressure?
When gas particles collide with the walls in their container and exert a force over every square meter
3 Effects of gas pressure:
> Temperature
Volume
Concentration
What is concentration?
The relative proportion of solute and solvent present in the solution
How does Concentration affect Gas Pressure?
The higher the concentration the more gas particles collide with each other more frequently
How does Volume affect Gas Pressure?
The smaller the volume the closer the particles are so there will be more collisions
How does Temperature affect Gas Pressure?
The higher the temperature the faster the particles move around and they collide more often
What is atmospheric pressure?
The pressure caused by collisions of air molecules that produce a force on an area
What is liquid pressure?
When water particles collide with each other or collide with a surface
Objects will float in liquids if…
The mass of the liquid that is displaced is equal to the mass of the object
3 reasons why things float:
- Shape of the object
- Mass of the object
- Amount of water displaced
