particles, atoms and density ༊*·˚ Flashcards
1.3
what is the density of an object a measure of?
the density of an object is a measure of how many particles are packed into a particular volume.
how do you calculate density?
mass / volume.
what are units used for density?
kg/m^3 or g/cm^3
how do you convert m “to the power of 3” to cm “to the power of 3”?
divide by a million
how do you calculate the volume of a cuboid?
height x width x depth
how do you calculate the volume of a cylinder?
2πr^2 x h
how do you find the volume of an irregular shape?
you can use a eureka can to collect and measure displaced water. the volume of the displaced water is the same as the volume of the object
how do you measure the volume of an irregular shape?
you can measure the difference in volume when adding the object to a known volume of water in a measuring cylinder.
how do you find the mass of an object?
use a digital or analogue balance.
what does the particle model explain?
the properties of liquids, solids and gases.
what happens to a substance when it changes states?
its temperature remains constant, its internal kinetic energy remains constant and its potential energy changes.
why is the particle model imperfect?
not all particles are the same size.
what is the internal energy of a substance made up of?
the internal energy of a substance is made up of two parts, the internal kinetic energy and the internal potential energy.
how do you calculate mass?
density x volume
how do you calculate volume?
mass / density
