Particles and Radiation Flashcards
Isotopes
Atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
Isotopic data
relative amount of different isotopes of an element present within a substance
Photoelectric Effect
The emission of electrons from the surface of a metal due to electromagnetic radiation
Threshold frequency
The minimum frequency of incident electromagnetic radiation required to remove a photoelectron from the surface of a metal due
Threshold Wavelength
The longest wavelength required from incident electromagnetic radiation to remove a photoelectron from the surface of a metal
Work Funtion
The minimum energy required to remove a photoelectron from the surface of the metal. (an electron can only escape from the surface of the metal if it absorbs a photon which has an energy equal to Φ or higher)
Stopping Potential
The potential difference required to stop photoelectron emission from occurring
Photoelectric current
A measure of the number of electrons emitted per second
Excitation
When an electron absorbs enough energy to move to a higher energy level
Ionisation
It is when an atom absorbs or emits an electron therefore it becomes charged.
