Particles Flashcards
What is a solid
The particles are tightly packed together in an arranged pattern. They have a fixed shape and volume so they can’t easily be compressed because it is very dense and have lots of particles in a small volume. It is hard to diffuse them in solids
What is a liquid
The particles are close but can still move. It takes the same of the container, moderate compressibility and can diffuse well. The are always moving and move in all directions
What is a gas
There is a low force of attraction and they are very far apart. They move in all directions and expand to fill a container. They are easy to compress as there is free space between the particles. They are not dense and there are not many particles in a large volume
What are the changes of state called
Solid to liquid- Melting
Solid to gas- sublimation
Liquid to solid- freezing
Liquid to gas- Boiling
Gas to solid- deposition
Gas to liquid- condensation
What is diffusion
When the particles spread out from an area of high concentration to low concentration
What is osmosis
The spreading out of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of high concentration to low concentration
~What is an atom
The smallest part of an element that can exist
What is an element
A substance made of one type of atom
What is a compound
When 2 or more different elements are chemically bonded. You can not separate them
What is a mixture
When 2 or more different elements are mixed but not chemically bonded. You can separate them
What is the substance being dissolved called
Solute
What is the substance it is dissolving into called
Solvent
What is the mixture of a solute and solvent
Solution
Explain the process of 2 separating techniques
The solution moved through the filter paper. What moves through it is called the filtrate. What is left behind is the residue. This process is called filtration
A Bunsen burner is under an evaporating dish, which contains a solution. What evaporates is the clean liquid is and what’s left is the solid inside it.
You can separate these because they are mixtures
