particle thoery Flashcards
what is particle theory
the way particles are arranged in different solids liquids or gases
How are the particles in solids arranged
There are strong forces so the particles are very close together and makes solids dense and hard to squash. The particles don’t move much but they vibrate on the spot
How are the particles in liquids arranged
There are weak forces that hold the particles quite close together but particles are free to move past each other so liquids can flow
How are particles in gases arranged
They are very far apart and there are very weak forces between the particles and lots of space. They move in diffferent directions and are very spread out
What is a change of state
When a solid liquid or gas turns into another state of matter
How do changes of matter work
When a solid is heated, the particles gain more energy and makes the particles move. The forces holding the particles together weaken and at a certain temperature the particles have enough energy to break free and turn into a liquid. When a liquid is heated the particles gain even more energy and makes the particles move even faster and weakens the forces holding the particles together and at a certain temperature, the particles have enough energy to break the forces and turn into a gas
What is diffusion
When the particles want to spread out
