Particle Physics Flashcards
What is specific charge?
Charge/mass
Four Fundamental forces?
Strong nuclear force
Weak force
Electromagnetic
Gravitational
What is the strong force?
Attractive force which holds the nucleus together, much stronger than the electrostatic force
What are the features of the strong nuclear force?
From 0 to 0.5 FM the forces repulsive but from 0.5 to 3FM the force is attractive
What is EM made of?
Electromagnetic radiation is made from particles of light called photons with energy E = HF
What is annihilation and what are the features of it?
Annihilation occur occurs when a particle meets its anti-particle all the mass gets converted to energy for instance an electron annihilating a Poron would make two photons
What is pair production?
A photo turns into a particle and an anti particle. The minimum energy for a photo for a repair production is the total rest energy of the particles which are produced.
What is gauge boson?
Particle exchange
Describe beta plus decay
Proton making neutron plus Poron plus neutrino electron (w+ exchange particle)
What are hadrons?
Particles affect by the strong nuclear reaction (baryons and mesons)
What are leptons
Particles which don’t interact with the strong nuclear force
Describe beta minus decay
Neutron into proton plus electron plus electron anti neutrino (w- exchange particle)
Describe beta minus decay
Neutron into proton plus electron plus electron anti neutrino (w- exchange particle)
What is electromagnetic repulsion?
Two electrons collide and both repulse during which a virtual photon is exchanged
What is Electron capture?
Proton plus electron making a neutron and an electron neutrino (w+ particle exchange)
