particle model of matter Flashcards
three states of matter:
solid
liquid
gases
SOLIDS
in a solid:
- particles are in a fixed pattern (lattice)
- fixes size & shape
LIQUIDS
in a liquid:
- fixed size
- free to move particles
- change shape
GASES
in gases:
- large gaps between particles
- compressible
- change size & shape
density equation=
Density= mass

volume
what happens when energy is added to a system?
when energy is added to a system its temperature will increase
what happens at the melting or boiling point?
At the melting or boiling point,
the energy being added causes a substance changes state not temperature
is a change of state reversible?
yes it is baby
what type of change is a change of state?
A change of state is a PHYSICAL change
- alters the internal energy but not the temperature or mass
equation for change of state =
energy for
change = mass x specific latent heat
of state
what is specific latent heat?
specific latent heat is the energy needed to cause 1 kg of a substance to change its state
what is latent heat of fusion?
Latent heat of fusion is the energy needed for substance to change from solid to a liquid (melt)
What is latent heat of vaporisation?
Latent heat of vaporisation is the energy needed for a substance to change from liquid to gas (evaporate)
what is sublimation?
sublimation is when a substance changes from a solid to a gas without having a liquid phase in the middle
when did sublimation happen?
sublimation happens when substances have a boiling point that is the same or lower than the melting point
why does an increase in temperature affect the pressure in gas?
Increasing the temperature increases the speed of the particles.
This increases the frequency and force with which the particles hit the walls and increases the pressure.
