Particle model of matter Flashcards
What are the forces, energy and density of a solid?
Force- strong attraction that hold the particles together in fixed arrangement
Energy- not much due to position but can only vibrate
Density- highest as the particles are close together
What are the forces, energy and density of a liquid?
Force- weaker between the particles
Energy- the particles have more energy than the solid due to its free-er arrangement
Density- less dense
What are the forces, energy and density of a gas?
Force- next to no force
Energy- more energy as the particles travel round at high speed in random directions
Density- low
What is the equation for density?
= mass / volume
What happens to the bonds if they change state?
They break
What happens to the bonds and energy when something cools or freezes?
They lose energy and form bonds
Does the number of particles change when it changes state?
No, they stay the same they are just in a different arrangement
What is latent heat?
The energy needed to change the state of a substance
What is specific latent heat?
It is the amount of energy needed change 1km of it from one state to another without changing its temperature
What is specific latent heat of fusion used for?
Changing state between a solid and liquid(melting or freezing)
What is specific latent heat of vaporisation used for?
Changing state between a liquid and gas (evaporating, boiling or condensing)
What is the equation for specific latent heat?
energy = mass x specific latent heat
The higher the temperature the higher the a…… e….. (s…..)
Average energy (and speed)
Does cooling gas create pressure?
yes
What causes net outwards face?
A change in pressure
