Particle Model of Matter Flashcards
What is the equation for density?
density = mass/volume
How can you measure the density of a solid object?
- Measure the mass using scales
- find the volume
- use the equation density = mass/ volume to calculate
Describe how you can measure the density of an irregular solid.
- Measure the mass of the solid using scales.
- Find the volume by using a eureka can and measure cylinder. Fill the eureka can so that it is full. Place a measuring cylinder under the spout and place the solid into the eureka can. Measure the volume of water displaced from the can.
- Calculate the density
What is the density of an object that floats in water?
less than 1000kg/m^3
What are the properties of a solid?
No flow, fixed shape, fixed volume, high density
What are the properties of a liquid?
Can flow, fits container shape, fixed volume, higher density than gas
What are the properties of a gas?
Can flow, fills container, volume can be changed, lower density than solid or liquid
What are the changes of state called?
Solid —> Liquid Melting
Liquid —> Solid Freezing
Liquid —> Gas Boiling
Gas —> Liquid Condensation
Solid —> Gas Sublimation
