particle model of matter Flashcards
what is the particle model of matter?
idea that all matter is made of tiny particles
solids
strong forces of attraction
hold particles in a fixed regular arrangement
particles vibrate around a fixed point
liquids
weaker force of attraction
particles are close together &move past eachother/form irregular arrangements
have more energy that particles in solids
move in random difections at low speen
gases
almost no forces of attraction
particles have more energy that other 2
particles are free to move
constantly moving in random direction and speeds
what is the process of solid ➡️ gas
subliming
when does the states change? why?
when something is heated / cooled
particles lose energy and form bonds
do you get a new substance from a change of state?
what happens to the particles ?
same substance but differnet form
number of particles doesn’t change
just arranged differnetly as mass is converted
what happens when you reverse a change in state?
the substance will return to its original form and get back its original properties
density equation?
density=mass/volume. p=m/v
internal energy
the total energy that a systems particles have in their kinetic and potentail energy stores
specific latent heat
amount of energy needed to change 1kg of a substance from one state to another without changing it’s temperature
whta is fusion and vaporisation?
fusion = solid ➡️ liquid
vaporisation = liquid ➡️ gas
specificclatent heat equation
energy= mass x specific latent heat
E=ml
pressure
the force per unit exerted on a surface
relationship between temperature and pressure
as temp increases , pressure increases
they are directly proportional
