Participation Flashcards
Participation crisis essay plan
Intro- ‘crisis’ if the majority of the population are not taking part in politics through either traditional or non traditional means. Evidence will show no crisis as non traditional means balance lack of traditional means.
P1- People not voting(low turnout in elections 60% 2024)
VS
People participating through epetitions (23 million signatures between 2015 and 2019). Higher turnouts in referendums on issues people care about eg Brexit/indyref
P2- membership of political parties very low due to partisan dealignment (the national trust has over 4x the membership of 3 main parties)
VS
Alternative participation eg through pressure groups is on the rise, PGs have seen large success in recent years.
P3- people aren’t participating by standing for election- 2024 only 31% of candidates were women. Parliament is unrepresentative of population, very white, male and old.
VS
Parliament is becoming more representative- 2024 41% of parliament is now women, 63% now went to comprehensive school so it is improving- can’t be a crisis if it’s improving
How long has Corbyn been an incumbent
Over 40 years serving his constituency however he was reelected in 2024 as an independent so is clearly popular in his constituency
