Buprenorphine
A
- 0.03mg/ml
- Moderate analgesic
- IV, IM, SQ, OTM administration
- Dogs and Cats: 0.02- 0.05 mg/kg q6h
- Adverse effects: high affinity for receptor, may be difficult to reverse
- Longer onset of action (45 min – 1 hour) regardless of route of administration- NOT A GOOD CHOICE FOR ACUTE PAIN!

A
- 3 mg/ml concentration
- Dogs: 0.06 mg/kg
- Cats: 0.12 mg/kg
- SQ ONLY administration, distal limb
- LASTS 72 HOURS
- Adverse effects: dysphoria, inappetance
- Contraindications/ Cautions: adverse effects to Buprenorpine, hypersensitivity to drugs.

A
- 1.8 mg/ml concentration
- Cats: 0.24 mg/kg
- SQ ONLY administration, distal limb
- LASTS 24 HOURS
- Adverse effects: dysphoria, inappetance
- Contraindications/ Cautions: adverse effects to Buprenorpine, hypersensitivity to drugs, DO NOT CONFUSE DOG AND CAT DOSE!

Butorphanol
A
- AKA Torbugesic (“Torb”)
- 10 mg/ml
- Partial opioid (Mu) agonist/antagonist, kappa agonist
- Mild sedative, minimal analgesic properties
- IV, IM, SQ, PO administration
- Sedative dose dogs and cats: 0.1 - 0.5 mg/kg
- Recommended starting dose: 0.25 mg/kg
- Antitussive (cough suppressant) dose in dogs: 0.05-0.1 mg/kg SC q6-12h
- Reversal agent: Naloxone 0.04 mg/kg
- excellent sedative effects when mixed with Dexmedetomidine 0.003 mg/kg
- Can be used as a partial reversal or rescue agent for mu-agonist opiates at a dose of 0.05mg/kg IV
- Adverse effects: possible dysphoria
- Contraindications/ Cautions: lower resp tract infections
