Part of the Heart Flashcards
What is the first heart sound (S1) also called?
LUB. It is the sound of the T+M valves shutting and the P+A valves opening.
What is the second heart sound (S2) also called?
DUB. It is the sound of the P+A valves shutting and the T+M valves opening.
What is the space between LUB and DUB called?
Systole. This is when blood is squeezed out of the ventricles because the pulmonary and aortic valves have just opened.
What happens during diastole?
Diastole is the space between DUB and the next LUB. During this time, blood is refilling from the atriums into the ventricles.
Which are the atrioventricular valves?
tricuspid and mitral valve
Where the atrioventricular valves located?
between the atriums and ventricles
What stops the tricuspid and mitral valve from going whatever direction it wants?
They are tethered to the chordae tendineae’s and papillary muscles.
What parts does the Interventricular Septum consist of?
It consists of the muscular part, which is the thick, strong portion that makes up most of the septum and the membranous part, which is the thinner, upper part near the heart valves.
What is the Interventricular Septum
The wall that separates the left and right ventricles of the heart. It has two parts to it.
How many layers are there in the heart?
There are 3 layers.
What are the three layers of the heart called?
Endocardium, Myocardium, and Pericardium.
What is the endocardium?
The innermost layer that lines the chambers and valves of the heart.
What is the myocardium?
The middle, thick layer made of muscle tissue that contracts to pump blood.
What is the pericardium?
The outer layer, which is a thin, protective membrane.
How many layers does the pericardium have and what are the names of the layers?
The pericardium has two layers, one is the visceral pericardium (inner layer), and the other is the parietal pericardium (outer layer)
