Primary Groups
4 basic characteristics
- A small group usually fewer than 15 individuals
- Interaction and communication tend to be intimate and personal in nature
- Strong emotional bonds with one another
- Persist over an extended period of time
Relationship are formal and institutional
Lacks one or more characteristics of a primary group
Secondary groups
Any group were people feel belongingness

Individuals who possess a set of similar characteristics by other people
Reference group
Made up of people of relatively equal status, where an individual interacts frequently
Peer group
A group wherein an individual uses his/her free will to join the group
Voluntary group
An individual becomes a member of the group because of factors which he has no control
Involuntary group
Characteristics of groups
- Members remain and communicate with one another.
- Identified through similar characteristics
- Has a certain mechanism for recruiting individuals
- Shares the same goals, purposes and objectives
