Part B Flashcards
- Types of fixed signals
Three position signals are automatic and are always colour light signals - they indicate….
Permissible speed
Give advance information about the next signal ahead
2.Classes of fixed signals operating in our area. I O D D H S
Intermediate Outer home Directing Departure Home Shunting
3.Define
Home signals
A home signal is provided to authorise entry to a station
- Define
Outer home signals
Is a fixed signal located (when provided) between the home signal and the intermediate signal
5.Define
Shunting signals
Control the passage of trains and shunting movements within station limits
6.Define
Departure signals
Control entry to a block section where movements are signalled in both directions
7.Define
Directing signals
Are used in station yards for the purpose of directing trains to various platforms, siding or positions to which the signals apply, and for protecting the lines to which they apply
Note : all automatic running signals to enter and move within station limits are equipped with a low speed light. Ie home outer home and directing
8.Define
Intermediate signals
Provided where necessary in block sections to divide the block section in to smaller sections, the entrance to which is controlled by an intermediate signal
9.Define
Station limits
Includes all lines within the outer most signals, station entry boards or points on each line controlled by the signaller for the station or as otherwise defined on S&I diagrams
Define
Banner indicators
Supply information about the next signal in advance when there is restricted sighting distance on this signal
What do Colour light shunting signals do?
Control the passage of trains and shunting movements within station limits
- What are the three types of colour light shunt signals?
Two position colour light shunting signal
Three position colour light shunting signal
Yellow light low speed signals on a fixed signal mast
- What does a shunting limit board define?
Mark the limits for shunting purposes in accordance with detail defined on S&I diagrams or local instructions
What is the object of automatic signalling?
To facilitate the regular movements of trains by
Dividing the line into sections
Controls the movement of trains in to such sections using fixed signals
Sections provide a safe distance between following trains
Axle counters or track circuits hold signals at stop when trains enter
Protects opposing trains in single line
12.Double unit signals
Double unit signals with two multi aspect or two searchlight units are provided as follows:
Where one or more lines diverge from the main line
At junctions
At locations where a reduction to intermediate or medium speed is required
At locations approaching a signal which may require a reduction to intermediate or medium speed
