Japonism, dark sharp outlines in the sunflowers. Blocked in colours

- all around him fields of sunflowers and yellow house
- very yellow palet and sunflower content as result
Financial state at the time
He was very very poor and has to use the cheap or free objects around him and whatever paint he could use- sunflower fields around him and paint
The impressionists and their influences
They used landscapes with mobile paints and used more abstract bold bright colours to portray more emotion through there work much like how Vincent uses brights to show his happiness
His mental state
Bi-polar disorder. Times of manic rapid painting- he was far from perfect and saw beauty in any ordinary object including a dying sunflower which he could emotionally relate to

Post impressionists- impasto brush strokes- thick- new content- portable paints

- told VG he painted to fast so he painted faster to prove Paul wrong
- first time Vincent had a friend so was happy and used happy colours
Early life influences
He drew allot as a kid- saw himself as a common person and drew ordinary objects like workers and old boots
He saw beauty in the ugly. Paints dead sunflowers as pretty as alive ones
Who Vincent influenced
The movement Fauves and German expressionists. He changed the way art was seen
